We’re in this together – oil sands industry partnering with AHS on vaccine roll out

Oil sands companies and OSCA have been working with Alberta Health Services, municipal and provincial governments to continuously build upon the measures in place to reduce COVID-19 exposure. Keeping our workers and communities healthy and safe is our number one priority.

As per Dr. Hinshaw’s update the high spread is not limited to any one area or group – this is a province-wide problem, in the context of a national and global one. The industry is seeing a similar increase in cases consistent with what we are seeing in the Wood Buffalo region. We have an unprecedented risk of transmission across the province with variant strains currently representing about 64 per cent of our active cases.

The oil sands industry is committed to helping the provincial health system and the region in its vaccine roll out. The oil sands industry has been an essential service during this pandemic and will continue to play a pivotal role as we navigate this third wave of COVID-19 in the region, Alberta and Canada. AHS and the oil sands industry are partnering on vaccine roll out. Planning is underway to offer on-site immunization clinics at industrial camps and sites in the RMWB, as vaccine supply and capacity allows.

We all need to take this virus seriously to bend the curve, including getting a vaccine as soon as eligible. These vaccines save lives, and protect our health and the health of those around us.

Additionally, with the rise in cases, existing protocols have been bolstered, and additional measures have been implemented such as:

  • Regularly using rapid screening tests, followed by AHS testing as required to ensure accurate results.
  • For those staying in project accommodations, there are stringent protocols and isolation camps for those who test positive so they are removed from the general workforce population right away.
  • Since the start of the pandemic, companies adjusted work schedules and limited sites to only essential staff, which reduced numbers by up to 60 per cent. Companies have deferred turnaround and maintenance work as much as they can.
